Japanese Grand Prix: Kimi Antonelli takes second career win in Suzuka – as it happened

The 2026 Formula 1 season brings us to its third grand prix event at Japan’s Suzuka Circuit, and ESPN offers comprehensive coverage.

Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes secured his second consecutive pole position and will spearhead the field into Turn 1, closely followed by his teammate, George Russell.

Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc are set to start directly behind the Mercedes duo. Max Verstappen, however, qualified in a disappointing 11th place after an early exit in Q2, expressing ‘extreme frustration’ with the outcome.

Verstappen has dominated this grand prix in recent years, claiming victory in the last four consecutive races from 2022 to 2025. However, securing a fifth straight win this Sunday would prove exceptionally challenging given Red Bull’s difficult start to the current season.

Mercedes appears optimistic about clinching their third victory in as many races this year, especially with both their drivers positioned on the front row. During the 2025 season in Japan, Antonelli, then an 18-year-old, made history by becoming the youngest driver ever to record a fastest lap and lead a Grand Prix.

The Suzuka Circuit, an 18-turn track, continues to be a fan favorite, distinguished by its unique ‘figure-of-eight’ configuration—a rarity as the sole circuit of its type on the Formula 1 schedule.

This circuit presents a demanding challenge for drivers, particularly through the intricate ‘Esses’ (Turns 3-6) and the renowned Spoon and 130R corners.
