DP World Tour: Alex Fitzpatrick wins first title at Hero Indian Open – a week after brother Matt’s PGA Tour triumph | Golf News

Alex Fitzpatrick secured his inaugural DP World Tour championship, winning the Hero Indian Open by two shots – just one week after his elder brother, Matt, celebrated a victory on the PGA Tour.

This achievement marks the first time a pair of brothers has won tournaments consecutively on both the PGA and DP World Tours.

Alex commenced the final round trailing defending champion Eugenio Chacarra by four strokes, a deficit that widened to six after just five holes. However, a remarkable shift in momentum saw Fitzpatrick surge while Chacarra faltered.

Fitzpatrick achieved eight birdies across 12 holes starting from the sixth, seizing the lead on the 15th as his birdie coincided with Chacarra’s fourth of six bogeys for the day.

Chacarra also dropped shots on holes 16 and 17, handing Fitzpatrick a four-shot advantage heading into the final hole. Despite a double bogey on the 18th, the Englishman completed his round with a three-under 69, finishing at nine under par.

This win, secured on Alex’s 87th DP World Tour outing and navigating a demanding back nine, continued the Fitzpatrick family’s success, following Matt’s narrow one-shot victory at the Valspar Championship in Florida the previous Sunday.

Fitzpatrick, filled with emotion, plans to celebrate with a soft drink

Alex Fitzpatrick shared with the DP World Tour: “I’m going to see my mum and dad [on Monday], and then we’re meeting my brother in Florida. It’s truly been an excellent couple of weeks for the Fitzpatrick family.”

“My celebration will involve a glass of Coca-Cola, contacting my friends and family, and allowing this achievement to truly sink in.

“A significant amount of dedication has gone into this for a long time, and there are many people I need to express gratitude to. I am absolutely thrilled, and I might just shed a tear. I am simply ecstatic.

“At no point today did I believe I had the win. I even asked my caddie about the number of putts I had from six feet, which I think speaks volumes about my mindset.”

“I’m utterly drained mentally. This course presents a true test, and I’m delighted to have emerged victorious.”

Fitzpatrick capitalises as Chacarra’s performance deteriorates

Fitzpatrick Jr.’s aspirations for a first title faced an early setback with consecutive bogeys on the third and fourth holes, leaving him two over par after five holes.

However, the 27-year-old then gained shots on three of his subsequent four holes before recovering from a bogey on the 10th with five birdies within seven holes.

Chacarra’s day began with a bogey, and any shot he recovered was soon surrendered, effectively ending his hopes of winning this event for a second consecutive time. These hopes completely vanished with three consecutive dropped shots starting from the 15th hole.

The player from Madrid’s three-over 75 positioned him solely in second place at seven under par. England’s Andy Sullivan, France’s Ugo Coussaud, and South Africa’s M. J. Daffue tied for third, each finishing at five under par.

The subsequent regular DP World Tour competition is the Volvo China Open in Shanghai, scheduled from April 23. Before that, the season’s inaugural major, The Masters at Augusta National, will take place starting April 9.
