Lionel Richie, understanding the challenges of celebrity life, recently offered advice to emerging artists following the controversy surrounding Chappell Roan’s interaction with a fan.
During a conversation with his son-in-law, Joel Madden, the Good Charlotte frontman mentioned that he had never heard Richie complain about fans approaching him in public.
“I was once unknown,” Richie shared, before admitting his difficulty in ignoring fans. “They have something they want to tell you. You can see it in their eyes. They want to communicate. For me to disregard them would be unacceptable.”

He continued, “Sometimes, you meet your biggest idol and instantly regret it.”
The “All Night Long” hitmaker declared, “I made a vow to myself – I’ll never be that kind of person. Never.”
Richie highlighted that not everyone is suited for stardom.
“What often happens, I tell aspiring artists, is that there’s one crucial factor you haven’t considered,” he stated. “I hope you genuinely enjoy interacting with people.
“Because if you don’t, here’s how your journey will unfold. You spend the initial part of your career constantly seeking attention: ‘Look at me, look at me, look at me.’ Then, you achieve fame. Suddenly it’s: ‘Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me.’”
He further added, “The universe granted your wish. So, what is it about people that you dislike, or do you desire fame and wealth without the public? It doesn’t function that way. You must be prepared to engage.”
Last week, while in town for Lollapalooza Brazil, the “Pink Pony Club” artist allegedly instructed her security to admonish Jorginho Frello’s daughter after the child saw Chappell eating breakfast at their São Paulo hotel, according to the professional soccer star.

Chappell, 28, discussed the incident on Instagram stories and later refuted the fan encounter after the “deeply upsetting” situation drew the attention of Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
In a statement posted on X, Cavaliere declared that Chappell was no longer permitted to perform in his city.
“I mean that as long as I’m in charge of our city — this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo No Rio,” he wrote in a translated statement from Portuguese. “I doubt that Shakira would do that! By the way, @FrelloJorginho, your little one is already the guest of honor from the organization in May!”
The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer took to social media Sunday morning to provide her “side of the story” from her bed.
“I didn’t even notice. I didn’t see a woman and a child. Nobody approached me. Nobody bothered me,” the musician confided to her followers from her bed. “I was simply having breakfast at my hotel, and I believe these individuals were also staying there.”
“I did not ask the security guard to speak to this mother and child. They didn’t come near me. They weren’t doing anything wrong.”

She emphasized, “I do not dislike people who enjoy my music. I don’t hate children. That’s absurd.”
“I apologize to the mother and child if someone made an assumption about you doing something, and if you felt uneasy, that truly saddens me. You didn’t deserve that.”
Jorginho, a midfielder for Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Flamengo, shared on Instagram stories that his family experienced a “very distressing situation” involving Chappell before her Lollapalooza Brazil performance.

He asserted online that his 11-year-old daughter was reprimanded by Chappell’s security simply for looking at the singer.
“The worst part is she didn’t even go up to her,” he recounted. “She merely walked past the singer’s table, confirmed it was her with a glance, smiled, and returned to sit with her mom. She said nothing, asked for nothing.”

Jorginho wrote that after his daughter walked by, “A large security guard approached their table while they were still having breakfast and began speaking in an extremely aggressive manner to both my wife and my daughter, stating that she shouldn’t allow my daughter to ‘disrespect’ or ‘harass’ other people.”

He concluded, “It’s disheartening to witness this kind of treatment from individuals who should recognize the significance of fans. Ultimately, they are the ones who build everything. I sincerely hope this prompts a period of reflection. No one should have to endure this, especially a child.”
