Angela Simmons felt a strong aversion towards Cam Newton during their initial (and sole) date.
The TV personality and vocalist appeared as a guest on the Friday (March 27) broadcast of Newton’s Funky Friday podcast, where they discussed their previous outing. They both confirmed the date took place in New York City in 2011, but Simmons elaborated on her experience, stating that Newton gave her “the ick.”
“We visited this diner. We sat and conversed. It was my first time meeting you. A mutual acquaintance introduced us,” Simmons elaborated.
Newton clarified that the friend in question was Corey Gamble, a talent manager and Kris Jenner’s long-standing partner. “Throughout the entire time, you were telling jokes and finding them hilarious yourself,” Simmons disclosed.
“Therefore, you were seated opposite me. And I wasn’t sure what to anticipate,” Simmons went on. “And you were telling jokes that I personally found unfunny. And you were praising yourself and laughing.”
The socialite mentioned she “was prepared to leave” after observing Newton’s demeanor, despite experiencing a different facet of his personality later that night.
“On our taxi ride back, that’s when you chose to be more pleasant. I was nearly at the point of saying, ‘Okay, fine. Goodbye.’ But we lingered outside the hotel. We conversed. That’s when I truly started to get to know you,” Simmons further explained.
Newton offered an alternative viewpoint, asserting he didn’t recall the events, despite having “many things occupying my thoughts.”
“That evening preceded my draft day. So, you can somewhat picture, you know… I had no idea where I was headed,” Newton stated, also mentioning he didn’t recall “acting quite so cheesy.”
“It came across as an arrogant jerk,” Simmons interrupted. “You were seated opposite me and, while I can’t recall the specific joke, I distinctly remember thinking ‘This isn’t amusing.’ And you were like, ‘Haha! Pat yourself on the back.’ I thought, ‘Oh, I’m prepared to depart.’”
In the end, the two reconciled and maintained an amicable relationship when in each other’s presence. Half a decade following their date, Simmons gave birth to a son with her late fiancé, Sutton Tennyson Sr., who tragically passed away in November 2018. The media figure also had a relationship with Yo Gotti between 2022 and 2025.
By the year 2015, Newton welcomed his initial child, followed by seven more biological children with three different women. The former NFL athlete has been in a relationship with comedian and actress Jasmin Brown since 2022, and they have two children together.
