TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Law enforcement in the Tucson area is bracing for potentially boisterous gatherings this Saturday as the Wildcats compete in the Final Four.
Tucson Police Department Capt. Lauren Pettey stated, “Enhanced law enforcement will be visible Saturday evening across University Boulevard, Congress, and Fourth Avenue.”
As the lead for NCAA safety planning, Pettey confirmed that officers would have riot gear ready should disturbances occur.
“Our goal is to ensure safe celebrations for all, which is why we’re implementing increased law enforcement presence and deploying extra resources,” Pettey explained.
This heightened security addresses past downtown riots, specifically those after Arizona’s 2001 national title loss to Duke and the Wildcats’ 2014 Elite Eight defeat by Wisconsin.
Following those losses, disgruntled fans converged on streets, torched vehicles, and assaulted officers with bottles and cans.
Local bar and restaurant proprietors acknowledged their awareness of these historical disturbances.
Jonathan Graham of Frog & Firkin commented, “We hope to avoid police intervention with sandbags or tear gas, as witnessed previously, though that was years ago. Perhaps the atmosphere on University is calmer now.”
Graham indicated the bar is bracing for potential issues by restricting entry to reservation-holders only, preventing overcrowding.
“With every employee, all our in-house security, and additional personnel from Wild West, we are fully prepared,” Graham asserted.
TPD will also commence traffic enforcement Saturday morning. Parking meters on University will be covered, anticipating street closures by barricades hours before the game.
Pettey articulated, “Our aim is to guarantee that all pedestrians and cyclists in the vicinity can freely move along University, Congress, and Fourth Avenue.”
The University of Arizona’s Office of Public Safety and UAPD are also enhancing security for the game, advising students to celebrate wisely, plan ahead, and reach out to UAPD for help if required.
