New iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2 leaks on design, release date arrive

While speculation abounds regarding the iPhone 18 Pro and the anticipated iPhone Fold, details on Apple’s other forthcoming flagship devices have been less common. Nevertheless, recent leaks have shed light on the design and release schedule for the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2.

iPhone 18: Retains Dynamic Island, minor exterior adjustments expected

A prominent Weibo leaker recently shared positive updates concerning the iPhone Fold’s release timeline.

However, over the weekend, Fixed Focus Digital, another well-known leaker, provided insights into two additional upcoming iPhone models from Apple.

Concerning the standard iPhone 18, he stated:

The iPhone 18’s base variant is expected to feature almost no alterations to its external appearance, save for possible subtle adjustments to its physical dimensions.

This information refutes an earlier assertion by Ice Universe, who suggested all iPhone 18 models would adopt a more compact Dynamic Island. Instead, it supports other reports indicating that the downsized Dynamic Island will be reserved solely for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max versions.

The “potential minor tweak” in dimensions is unlikely to be overtly perceptible to users. The device is still anticipated to retain the 6.3-inch display size seen in the iPhone 17.

Apple frequently implements subtle, often unnoticeable, dimensional adjustments between yearly iterations. While usually minor, these changes can occasionally cause issues with compatibility for existing iPhone cases.

iPhone Air 2: Anticipated for a fall release, bringing incremental updates

Fixed Focus Digital’s subsequent post focused on the iPhone Air 2.

This leaker has been a prominent voice challenging reports that suggest Apple’s next-generation iPhone Air has been postponed until 2027.

The Information previously reported that the iPhone Air 2’s launch was being deferred until at least spring 2027. The rationale provided was to allow Apple sufficient time to incorporate an additional rear camera.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg concurred with the spring 2027 timeframe but expressed doubts regarding the inclusion of a second camera.

In contrast, Fixed Focus Digital has asserted on two prior occasions that the iPhone Air 2 will debut this fall, concurrently with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold. He has further characterized it as a “routine upgrade,” lacking significant alterations such as a second camera or notable design enhancements.

The leaker’s most recent update corroborates that Apple intends to proceed with this strategy. According to a Google Translate rendition, the post states, “Air 2 will follow its typical product iteration cycle.”

Should the iPhone Air 2’s modifications indeed be confined to internal enhancements, such as the A20 Pro chip, it stands to reason that a supply chain insider might possess more accurate information regarding its release schedule than publications like The Information and Bloomberg.

A fall release for the iPhone Air 2 would allow Apple to introduce its customary four new models. However, these would likely carry higher price tags than usual, given that the standard iPhone 18 is not expected until early 2027.
