Complete Team Lineups
Manager Marco Silva, perhaps contemplating his team’s recent lack of scoring power, has opted for an offensive substitutes’ bench. Issa Diop is the sole defensive option, apart from the attack-minded Antonee Robinson. Of all the substitutes, Tammy Abraham appears to be the most promising candidate for a late goal.
Fulham (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Sessegnon; Lukic, Berge; Wilson, Smith Rowe, Chukwueze; Jimenez.
Substitutes include: Lecomte, Diop, Robinson, Cairney, Reed, King, Bobb, Muniz, Kusi-Asane.
Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Bogarde, Tielemans; McGinn, Buendia, Rogers; Watkins.
Their bench consists of: Bizot, Mings, Lindelof, Maatsen, Douglas Luiz, Barkley, Sancho, Bailey, Abraham.
Villa’s Brief Team Update: Onana Absent
Unai Emery has implemented four alterations to his squad. The absence of Amadou Onana, likely due to injury, necessitates one change, with Lamare Bogarde stepping into his defensive midfield role. In defense, Pau Torres and Lucas Digne are introduced, replacing Tyrone Mings and Ian Maatsen respectively. Higher up the pitch, Emi Buendia takes over from Ross Barkley.
Fulham’s Quick Team Summary: Three Changes, Iwobi Injured
Following last week’s draw against Brentford, Marco Silva has made several adjustments. Sander Berge returns to partner Sasa Lukic in midfield, a pairing not seen in some time. Raul Jimenez is preferred over Rodrigo Muniz as the central striker, and Samuel Chukwueze takes Alex Iwobi’s spot on the left wing, with Iwobi sidelined due to a hamstring injury.
Opening Remarks
Good morning to all, and a warm welcome to today’s inaugural Premier League fixture. For both competing teams, securing a European qualification spot is the overarching objective.
Currently sitting in fourth position, Aston Villa are strongly positioned for a Champions League berth. A superior performance against Fulham today compared to Manchester United’s result against Brentford on Monday would see them climb to third. Furthermore, they possess an alternative path to Europe’s elite competition: triumphing in the Europa League, a tournament in which their manager, Unai Emery, is a renowned specialist.
Meanwhile, Marco Silva’s Fulham, currently 12th, face a tougher challenge for European qualification, but their aspirations remain alive. A victory in this match would propel them to tenth place, potentially requiring just one additional win to reach sixth. Intriguingly, three points today would also see them draw level with their inconsistent local rivals, Chelsea.
However, Fulham must first rediscover their scoring touch. They have failed to find the net in five of their last seven matches, with goals only coming against struggling Burnley and an unsteady Tottenham. Fulham is still awaiting their first goal of April, contrasting sharply with Villa’s impressive tally of 12 goals over the past 16 days. Last Sunday, in an exhilarating display at Villa Park, they became the season’s first team to net four against Sunderland (though not the last). Following a period of poor form yielding only 12 points from 12 league games, Villa has recently secured seven points from their last three fixtures, in addition to a commanding victory over Bologna.
Current statistics favor Villa, who secured a 3-1 victory in their previous encounter in September. However, Fulham generally perform better at home than Villa does on the road. Fulham is under no pressure to rotate their squad, they are in dire need of points, and it feels as though fortune is due to grant them some goals, promising an engaging match. We’ll return shortly with the team lineups.
