Report: No market yet for Mac Jones

Mac Jones might not be a part of the upcoming quarterback trade discussions.

According to The Athletic, there’s currently no trade market for the backup to 49ers starter Brock Purdy.

This situation is understandable. Given the abundance of free-agent quarterbacks available now, with more expected after roster cuts, teams in need of a signal-caller are likely prioritizing options that don’t require trading draft capital.

Last year, the 49ers shrewdly signed Jones to a two-year contract, securing his rights through 2026. While they claim they’re not looking to trade him, this is likely a negotiating tactic. At the right compensation, they would certainly find a new backup for the upcoming season.

Jones is set to earn a modest $3.25 million in 2026. Should a team acquire him intending him to start or compete for the starting role, he might seek a salary increase, complicating any potential deal.

Presently, it’s logical for quarterback-seeking teams to explore the open market. After the initial wave of free agency passes, a team still needing to fill the position might then consider pursuing the 2021 first-round draft pick.
