League sources informed ESPN that the Golden State Warriors plan to sideline star guard Stephen Curry for an additional two games due to his persistent knee issue, extending his lengthy absence to a minimum of 25 consecutive matchups.
Although Curry has progressed to more rigorous on-court training in recent weeks, he was unable to secure approval for a 5-on-5 scrimmage, contrary to the team’s earlier expectations.
According to team sources, Curry remains optimistic about making a comeback before the regular season concludes. He intends to dedicate the upcoming week to further intensifying his court activities, aiming to receive clearance for scrimmaging from Rick Celebrini, the franchise’s cautious lead medical authority regarding Curry’s problematic right knee.
Ahead of Friday’s game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr conceded that time is running out for Curry’s return, suggesting that swift approval is necessary, or a season-ending shutdown becomes unavoidable.
“We won’t just bring him back [only] for the play-in tournament,” Kerr stated. “He would require some game time. We need to provide him a proper lead-up if this is to succeed. And, it’s fair to admit, we’re quickly depleting our remaining schedule.”
In Curry’s absence, the Warriors have struggled, posting an 8-15 record and dropping their overall standing to 35-38, solidifying their position as the 10th seed in the Western Conference.
Having already seen their starting wing players, Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody, sidelined with season-ending knee injuries, the franchise has engaged in internal discussions regarding the prudence of reintroducing Curry given what increasingly appears to be a lost season.
Nonetheless, Curry has remained determined to return to play, despite enduring multiple setbacks since his initial departure from the lineup on January 30 due to a “runner’s knee.” While numerous MRI scans have shown no structural damage, persistent pain and swelling continue.
Curry is slated to miss both Friday night’s home match against the Washington Wizards and Sunday’s away game facing the Denver Nuggets. The Warriors’ next game is scheduled for Wednesday at home on ESPN, where they will host the San Antonio Spurs.
The regular season concludes on April 12. The Warriors are already confirmed for the play-in tournament.
