HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Police Department reported that one of its officers and their K9 partner are recuperating after their police vehicle overturned in a downtown crash late Friday night.
HPD stated that the officer and K9 were en route to aid in a pursuit when their cruiser crashed into a black Jeep at the intersection of Smith and Pease Streets around midnight. Investigators indicated the Jeep ran a red light, leading to the collision. The police car subsequently flipped, rolled, and traveled almost a full block, according to officials.
Authorities confirmed that the officer’s emergency lights and sirens were operational at the time of the incident.
Officers reported no signs of impairment from the Jeep’s driver. While the driver was reportedly transported to a hospital, police do not believe any individuals sustained serious injuries.
Both the HPD officer and the K9 were hospitalized for their injuries and are anticipated to make a full recovery, officials confirmed. The Jeep’s driver was also reportedly taken to the hospital, though no severe injuries were reported.
The Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division is conducting an investigation.
