Universal Pictures is bringing the cast of The Mummy back together for a new film.
John Hannah, known for his role in the previous Mummy films from the turn of the millennium, is confirmed to rejoin Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the upcoming installment of the popular horror-adventure series.
The feature is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, members of the Radio Silence filmmaking group, who successfully revived the Scream franchise with films in 2022 and 2023, and are also behind the Ready or Not movies. The screenplay has been penned by David Coggeshall, recognized for his work on The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill.
Details regarding the plot are currently under strict wraps. The original movie, which premiered in 1999, featured Fraser as an adventurous treasure hunter who, while exploring 1920s Egypt with Weisz’s spirited librarian character, inadvertently resurrected a powerful ancient high priest.
Hannah portrayed the librarian’s somewhat unscrupulous brother, a character often seeking personal gain throughout the original trilogy. Despite crumbling cities and treasures, his thieving ways typically ensured he ended each escapade with a small fortune. Hannah appeared alongside Fraser in all three original films, while Weisz participated in the first two.
Universal has scheduled the release of this new film for May 19, 2028. Production is reportedly slated to commence in the fall, with filming locations expected to include London and Morocco.
To build anticipation, Universal will re-release 2001’s The Mummy Returns in theaters across the nation on March 27, 2026, commemorating its 25th anniversary.
Sean Daniel, who produced the initial movies with his late colleague James Jacks, returns in a producing capacity. He is joined by frequent Radio Silence collaborators William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein, producing under their Project X Entertainment banner. Project X has previously been involved with Radio Silence productions such as Abigail and the recent Scream films.
Brendan Fraser and Jason F. Brown of Hivemind are credited as executive producers for the project.
Hannah, a respected British actor, is celebrated for his memorable performances, including scene-stealing moments in the 1990s classic Four Weddings and a Funeral and a significant role in Starz’s Spartacus series. His career also boasts appearances in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Last of Us, and Black Mirror.
He is represented by Artist’s Rights Group and Felker Toczek.
