Don’t expect to see Rory McIlroy celebrating his Masters triumph with a victory lap at Harbour Town this weekend.

The golfer from Northern Ireland joins a list of prominent players absent from the RBC Heritage, although his participation was not anticipated.

McIlroy’s choice to bypass this Signature Event was announced the previous week, even before his win at Augusta National.

While some might assume McIlroy is skipping the tournament because it follows The Masters, needing a break to celebrate and relax, his absence isn’t primarily about the schedule.

Actually, the RBC Heritage is simply a tournament McIlroy doesn’t particularly favor, believing it doesn’t align with his playing style.

Following a T41 finish at Harbour Town in 2020, McIlroy essentially stated that the RBC Heritage would not become a consistent fixture on his yearly calendar.

He commented: “Upon arriving here and playing the course, I was reminded why I haven’t participated in some time. It’s challenging.

“It’s a beautiful location. However, other courses on the Tour likely suit my game more effectively, and naturally, the week following the Masters is always demanding.

“Players often come here to unwind, but for me, unwinding means not touching golf clubs for an entire week.”

Regarding his underwhelming 2020 performance, he elaborated: “I started reasonably well, but then hitting the ball into the water on the fourth hole completely halted any progress. I suppose I played adequately afterward. I birdied nine and then made a couple more birdies on the final stretch.

“It’s acceptable. It was one of those weeks where, clearly, scores were low and tightly grouped. You needed to sink many putts, which I didn’t manage consistently throughout the week. Nevertheless, I’m fairly content with my overall play.”

Notably, McIlroy incurred a $3 million fine for withdrawing from the 2023 event. The PGA Tour’s policy then stated that players could only miss one Signature Event per season, and this marked McIlroy’s second absence that year (having also missed the Sentry Tournament of Champions).

This $3 million was deducted from his year-end Player Impact Program bonus.

Although McIlroy will be absent from Harbour Town, and Justin Rose has also pulled out of the RBC Heritage, a strong contingent of notable players will still compete this weekend.

Seventeen of the top 20 global players are slated to appear, featuring current title holder Justin Thomas and the world’s top-ranked player, Scottie Scheffler.

An additional 10 players have been included in the RBC Heritage field following the PGA Tour’s announcement that 2025 event winners (who were outside the FedExCup top 50) would receive invitations to Harbour Town, replacing their opportunity to play in The Sentry, which was canceled this year.

Other prominent participants include Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, and the currently surging Cameron Young.
