This upcoming contest marks the eighth postseason clash between these intrastate rivals. Their inaugural playoff meeting was in the 1989 Patrick Division Finals, which the Flyers ultimately won in seven games. Philadelphia also triumphed in five games during the 1997 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, a run that saw them reach the Stanley Cup Final before being swept by the Detroit Red Wings. Further Flyer victories include the 2000 conference semifinals (six games) and the 2012 conference quarterfinals (six games).
Conversely, the Penguins have also had their share of playoff dominance over the Flyers. They eliminated Philadelphia in the 2008 Eastern Conference Final in five games, though they subsequently lost the Cup Final to the Red Wings in six. The very next season, Pittsburgh defeated the Flyers in the conference quarterfinals (six games) on their way to clinching the Stanley Cup. The most recent playoff encounter between these teams was the 2018 first round, which Pittsburgh won in six games.
