Overall Outlook: PBKS Aim to Continue Dominant Form
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are currently enjoying an impressive five-match winning streak, placing them just two victories shy of their personal best from the 2013-14 seasons. Their performance has been consistently strong across all phases of the game. Notably, their powerplay batting, spearheaded by Priyansh Arya, has been particularly explosive, and the team exudes an aura of invincibility when chasing targets, largely due to the contributions of Shreyas Iyer.
In stark contrast, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have found it difficult to successfully pursue large totals. This season, they have failed to chase down 200 in all three attempts, and their record since 2024 shows them falling short in eight out of ten pursuits of 200 runs or more. Adding to their woes is an apparent lack of a clear strategy regarding player utilization, especially with the Impact Player rule.
Their Impact Player choices have been inconsistent, cycling between Ashutosh Sharma (against CSK), Karun Nair (against RCB), and back to Ashutosh (against SRH). Pathum Nissanka’s initial bright form has faded, while Nitish Rana, after an earlier omission, now finds himself under renewed pressure.
This pervasive uncertainty also extends to their bowling unit. Against SRH, who amassed a formidable 242 runs, key bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel bowled only two overs each, while Rana completed his full quota, conceding 55 runs. Just two matches later, Auqib Nabi was relegated to the bench once more. These decisions collectively suggest a team still struggling to pinpoint its most effective playing combination.
Such a state of indecision is far from ideal at the halfway point of the tournament. With a crucial encounter against the league leaders approaching, DC must urgently resolve these systemic issues.

Player Focus: Pathum Nissanka and Vijaykumar Vyshak
Pathum Nissanka enjoyed a promising beginning to his IPL tenure, notching scores of 44, 41, and 41 in three of his initial four innings. However, he subsequently registered low scores against RCB and SRH in his last two outings. The upcoming matches hold significant importance for him, particularly with Mitchell Starc’s imminent return. A strong performance now could present a welcome selection dilemma for the team management. Should Starc be integrated into the squad, it’s likely an overseas batter will need to be dropped, and Nissanka appears most vulnerable given the availability of skilled Indian batters like Prithvi Shaw or Karun Nair. While a harsh decision after only two modest scores, such is often the ruthless nature of IPL team selections.
By the halfway stage of IPL 2026, Vijaykumar Vyshak has already made more appearances than in his entire previous season, when his selections were largely tactical. This year, however, he has demonstrated a noticeable enhancement in his overall game. He appears fitter, possesses increased pace, and exhibits greater versatility. No longer solely relying on his knuckleball, Vyshak has expanded his arsenal to include a mix of hard lengths, cutters, and yorkers, particularly effective during the death overs. An economy rate of 10.05 might seem elevated, but it reflects as much on the high-scoring surfaces as it does on his demanding role. Within the PBKS squad, there is clear confidence in his abilities. Interestingly, every wicket he has claimed this season has come from his primary delivery. He has proven especially impactful at the death, taking a wicket every eight balls while conceding only nine runs per over.
The previous fixture at the Kotla was an enthralling contest, with GT successfully defending a single run off the final delivery. David Miller’s decision to decline a single became a major talking point in a match that saw a colossal 419 runs scored. This upcoming game will take place on a similar pitch, with the ground staff having had two weeks since that match to prepare, ensuring the surface retains ample bounce and sheen to facilitate another high-scoring encounter.
