On Thursday, a Sacramento Regional Transit light rail train collided with a car in Rancho Cordova, propelling the vehicle onto the central rail line. This incident left three people critically injured, with one succumbing to their injuries subsequently.
The collision between the RT light rail train and the automobile occurred around 5:20 p.m., near the junction of Mills Park Drive and Folsom Boulevard.
According to a news release from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, firefighters discovered the car that had been hit by the light rail train, with the force of the impact having shunted the vehicle onto the middle of the track.
Metro Fire officials reported that emergency personnel extracted three injured individuals from the damaged car. One occupant required extrication as their foot was trapped within the vehicle.
All three occupants were transported via ambulance to a local hospital; tragically, one of the victims passed away later, as confirmed by fire officials.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office verified on Friday that Fidel Carrasco Ceniceros, a 26-year-old resident of Rancho Cordova, died as a result of injuries sustained in the vehicle collision.
Metro Fire published images of the accident scene, revealing what looked like a dark gray Toyota Prius involved in the incident.
Both the Rancho Cordova Police Department and RT are conducting an investigation into the collision. RT officials stated in a social media update on Thursday evening that the accident occurred because “the driver of a car bypassed the lowered crossing arms and struck a train heading towards Folsom.”
To assist passengers in reaching their destinations, a bus bridge service was established on the Gold Line, operating between the Mather Field/Mills and Sunrise RT stations.
Metro Fire officials issued a reminder to motorists, urging them to exercise vigilance when approaching and traversing railway crossings, and to consistently be aware of their environment.
