Matchup Analysis: Fernandez vs. Andreeva

Head-to-Head Record: Even at 1-1
Previous Encounter: Fernandez won 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the 2023 Hong Kong Round of 16

Fernandez appears to be hitting her stride on clay. Following a challenging start to the singles season, marked by early eliminations in tournaments like the Australian Open, Doha, and Indian Wells, she has now advanced to consecutive quarterfinals in Stuttgart and Madrid.

“We’ve dedicated ourselves to hard work,” Fernandez commented on Monday before Andreeva’s victory. “Witnessing these results emerge feels rewarding, and approaching it with composure and optimism is the correct path.”

At Stuttgart, she came close to a semifinal berth, pushing eventual winner Elena Rybakina to save match points in a memorable three-set encounter. In Madrid, she has shown great composure, securing a pair of straight-sets victories and orchestrating a comeback against the No. 15 seed, Iva Jovic, to reach her inaugural quarterfinal here. The Canadian aims for her first semifinal appearance since her run in Hong Kong last season.

“Regardless of the opponent, it will be a challenging match,” Fernandez stated. “My focus needs to be on myself, trusting my approach, and hoping for a positive outcome.”

For Andreeva, after achieving straightforward victories in the second and third rounds, Anna Bondar provided a significant challenge for the 18-year-old. Despite losing the opening set in a tiebreak, Andreeva rallied to secure a tense 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5) win, even after squandering a 5-1 lead. She ultimately triumphed, but faces a quick turnaround for an afternoon match on Monday.

Overall, Andreeva has demonstrated strong performances this clay season. Entering Linz at the last minute, she clinched her second 500-level title of the year. She advanced to the semifinals in Stuttgart, where she was defeated by Rybakina, and has now reached the Madrid quarterfinals for the third consecutive year.

“Leylah is undoubtedly a challenging competitor,” Andreeva remarked. “I plan to discuss the match with Conchita [Martinez], including our strategy and what actions we need to take.”

Match Analysis: Sabalenka vs. Baptiste

Head-to-Head Series: Sabalenka holds a 1-0 advantage
Most Recent Matchup: Sabalenka defeated Baptiste 6-4, 6-4 in the 2026 Miami Open quarterfinals

Sabalenka and Baptiste are set to face off in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive WTA 1000 event. Their previous encounter at the Miami Open quarterfinals saw Sabalenka narrowly defeat the American 6-4, 6-4, a victory that paved her way to securing her second successive Miami title and achieving the 2026 Sunshine Double.

Sabalenka overcomes Baptiste to advance to second consecutive Miami semifinal

In their only prior meeting, Sabalenka’s three service breaks, compared to Baptiste’s single break, proved decisive. Nevertheless, Baptiste is beginning to build momentum; the Miami match marked her debut WTA 1000 quarterfinal as the current World No. 32. Moreover, the upcoming match will be played on an entirely different surface, though Baptiste will once again confront the reigning champion, mirroring her Miami challenge.

“My approach is to keep playing my style of game, maintaining my current performance,” Baptiste stated. “If I can improve my consistency slightly and perhaps put more pressure on her service games, then I believe I have a genuine chance to win, and I truly think I can.”

Baptiste is fresh off an exhilarating three-set triumph against Belinda Bencic. She recovered impressively after dropping the season’s longest tiebreak (16-14), a set in which Bencic fended off six match points to force a deciding set. In the end, Baptiste clinched her eighth WTA 1000 main draw victory of the 2026 season, matching her career high from 2025.

Regarding Sabalenka, her Monday comeback victory against Naomi Osaka (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) has extended her winning streak in WTA 1000 tournaments to 15 matches, spanning from Indian Wells to the present. This achievement mirrors her previous best streak, which ran from Miami through the Madrid and Rome quarterfinals in 2025.

As a three-time champion of this event, Sabalenka possesses an intimate understanding of the Madrid tournament. The World No. 1 is performing consistently with her ranking, having won her last 15 matches, including titles at Indian Wells and Miami. However, she professes not to dwell on this impressive streak.

“My sole objective is to perform to the best of my ability in each match, and that’s precisely where my concentration lies,” Sabalenka commented.
