A broad grin, characteristic dimples, and those slightly narrowed eyes — that’s the enduring image of Alex Zanardi in our minds. Always clad in a racing suit, be it for Formula 1, Ganassi, or his Italian handbike team, the attire itself held less significance.
Whether he navigated with four wheels or three, it mattered even less. For individuals like him – to borrow a phrase from a renowned New Jersey songwriter – are, fundamentally, born to race.
Alex Zanardi is no longer with us. It feels profoundly strange to utter these words. His passing occurred on a vibrant spring day, a time when colors, fragrances, and the promise of summer irresistibly burst forth. Yet, this was no ordinary day; since 1994, May 1st has held a distinct weight in motorsport, a weight now immeasurably heavier.
Truly exceptional was the narrative of this Bologna native, born in 1966 and raised in Castel Maggiore, a town nestled in the Emilia plain. While near a regional capital, it remained a modest, provincial place in every sense. Yet, it is often in such settings that extraordinary tales unfold.
His racing journey commenced at 14 with karts, quickly leading to a swift climb through single-seater ranks. He competed in Italian Formula 3 in 1988, Formula 3000 in 1991, and that very year, he made his initial Formula 1 appearance with Jordan.

Zanardi’s Grand Prix debut in Spain saw him finish ninth, a feat he replicated in Australia. He then had brief stints with Minardi the following year, and with Lotus from 1993 to 1994.
“America is far away, on the other side of the moon,” sang Lucio Dalla, another distinguished son of Bologna. But it was the American dream that truly solidified Alex’s legacy. In 1995, Zanardi joined Ganassi, embarking on an iconic journey in the United States, where he secured two CART (now IndyCar) titles. This same championship, however, would present the first profound turning point in his life.
On September 15, 2001, at the Lausitzring, with only 13 laps remaining, Zanardi lost control of his car after exiting the pits, a consequence of fluids on the track. His vehicle spun across the circuit and was violently struck by Alex Tagliani. The devastating impact resulted in the Bologna driver losing both legs. His condition was immediately critical, and despite massive blood loss and a near-death experience, he miraculously survived.
Admitted to a Berlin hospital in critical condition, he received last rites from the IndyCar chaplain – yet Alex clung to life. After six weeks of hospitalization and 15 surgical procedures, Zanardi returned home to commence rehabilitation. A true miracle, or perhaps simply the sheer force of his refusal to yield, his unwavering determination not to surrender.
These were enduring qualities of the Castel Maggiore native, alongside his signature sense of humor. This humor was powerfully displayed at the Autosprint Golden Helmets awards, just weeks after the Lausitzring accident, when he stood from his wheelchair and declared on stage: “It’s been a long time since I’ve been this emotional. I’m so emotional my legs are shaking.”
There were tears, laughter, and resounding applause for a man in a simple grey suit, whose eyes eloquently conveyed what words could not.

From that pivotal moment, a new existence, a new career blossomed. Yet, the presence of wheels remained central. He returned to car racing in the World Touring Car Championship, but it was handcycling that truly captured his focus.
The New York Marathon, World Championships, and then the London Paralympics in 2012, where he famously secured two gold medals and one silver. Another triumphant chapter. When Alex set his mind to something, his commitment was unmatched.
Life, however, delivered another brutal twist. On June 19, 2020, while participating in a stage of the Obiettivo 3 relay – an event for Paralympic handbike athletes – Zanardi lost control of his vehicle, veering into the oncoming lane directly into the path of a truck. The ensuing collision inflicted exceptionally severe injuries.
His immediate hospitalization at the Santa Maria alle Scotte hospital was critical for treating his injuries. This was followed by multiple delicate operations and a transfer to a Padua hospital. By the end of December 2021, he had returned home, though not yet permanently.
After a further period of treatment in Ravenna, he finally returned home for good in late September 2022. Following this, an extended and understandable period of silence surrounded his condition – until today, when the heartbreaking news of his passing at the age of 59 was shared.

“It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred unexpectedly on the evening of yesterday, May 1,” read a statement disseminated by his family via social media.
“Alex passed away peacefully, enveloped by the affection of his family. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered support during these challenging hours and requests respect for their profound grief and privacy during this period of mourning. Details regarding the funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later time.”
They say reading many books allows one to experience a myriad of lives within a single lifetime. Yet, if there was ever a man who embodied this concept without needing to immerse himself in countless pages, it was Alessandro Zanardi. He did so with immense strength, indomitable courage, and yes, also with pain – but always radiating that beloved smile. And all who followed his incredible achievements and drew inspiration from his story will forever cherish his memory. Sometimes, small gestures can transform a day. Other times, they can transform a life.
We are absolutely certain that Alex, through his unwavering courage and impactful actions, changed countless lives.
