Anfernee Jennings, Patriots’ longest-tenured player, to reportedly be released

After six seasons, the New England Patriots are parting ways with Anfernee Jennings, their longest-serving player. Jennings, originally a third-round draft selection for the team in 2020, is set to be released this Wednesday.

The initial report of this news came from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jennings, a product of Nick Saban’s University of Alabama football program, was drafted 87th overall in 2020 by the Patriots, then under Bill Belichick. Initially a rotational player, his role expanded significantly in 2023 when Pro Bowler Matthew Judon missed most of the season due to injury. This shift allowed Jennings to step into a starting position, establishing himself as one of the league’s top outside linebackers against the run.

He commenced the subsequent year as a starter under new head coach Jerod Mayo, but his responsibilities shifted again when Mike Vrabel took charge the following year. Although his participation grew throughout the season, Jennings concluded the year with a defensive snap share of only 32% — his lowest since 2022.

Overall, Jennings concludes his tenure with the Patriots having participated in 79 regular season and playoff contests. His career statistics include 233 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles along with two recoveries.

The 28-year-old, who was entering the final year of his deal with a $4.87 million salary cap impact, marks the second edge rusher to depart the Patriots on Wednesday. News of K’Lavon Chaisson’s departure to the Washington Commanders surfaced just minutes prior.

The NFL’s free agency period and the 2026 league year are slated to commence at 4 p.m. ET.
