Another round of heavy rain and severe storms | 13Weather Blog

Expect dense fog, heavy rain, and stormy conditions over the next 24 hours, significantly increasing the risk of widespread flooding.

INDIANAPOLIS –

Central Indiana Drenched: Heavy Rains Bring Fog and Flooding

Following an exceptional 24-hour downpour, various areas across central Indiana are grappling with significant flooding and thick fog.

Indianapolis recorded almost 3.5 inches of rain, surpassing the total liquid equivalent from melted snow in January and February combined. This is an astonishing figure for early March!

Regions along and immediately south of the I-70 corridor experienced widespread rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, leading to ongoing flooding concerns. Road ponding, overflowing creeks, and standing water in lower elevations are persistent issues.

Dense Fog persists

Within the areas most affected by heavy rainfall, dense fog has intermittently diminished visibility to nearly zero. This restricted visibility is expected to recur throughout today, posing hazards for travelers.

Storm Activity to Intensify This Afternoon

Expect a rise in storm frequency and severity this afternoon, particularly across the central and southern half of Indiana.

There is a Level 1 (out of 5) risk of severe weather.

Potential hazards consist of:

  • Hail up to pea or nickel size

  • Wind gusts exceeding 60 mph

  • Sporadic rotating storms possible in far southern and southwestern Indiana, linked to an approaching warm front

Despite a generally low severe weather threat, any more intense storm has the potential to briefly turn severe.

Successive Rounds of Rainfall Expected

Several systems of rain and thunderstorms are anticipated.

While rainfall is set to lessen by Thursday afternoon, fog could persist into Friday morning.

Record-Breaking Warmth Arrives Friday

Following this wet period, the weather will dramatically shift to spring-like, even summer-like, temperatures.

Forecasts predict highs in Indianapolis on Friday to reach 75° to almost 80°.

New record high temperatures could be set.

While there’s a slight chance of severe storms Friday, the primary atmospheric lift is expected to be west of Indiana. Most regions anticipate only scattered showers or thunderstorms. Nevertheless, any developing storm has the potential to intensify, requiring close observation.
