Aryna Sabalenka Shocked by Miami Open Scheduling Decision

South Florida sports often contend with rain, and this week’s Miami Open has seen numerous top players affected by delays. Friday evening, the world’s top female player was particularly unfortunate.

Organizers of the tournament had to make tough calls, rescheduling matches and relocating them to alternative courts, which included shifting WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Even with the eleventh-hour venue change, Sabalenka triumphed over Ann Li in straight sets: 7-6 (5), 6-4.

In her press conference after the match, Sabalenka expressed “real shock” at the choice to prioritize the Carlos Alcaraz vs. Joao Fonseca match over her own. She then shared insights into the discussions that took place off-court.

“Honestly, I was quite stunned”

“Honestly, I was quite surprised that they were thinking of canceling my match, or that they were offering me a few stadium choices. I thought, ‘Why can’t Alcaraz and Fonseca just start later?’ especially since the night session yesterday began at 9:00 with de Minaur playing.”

Sabalenka went on, “Indeed, I was quite taken aback by the suggestion of even canceling my match, but I opted to play today so that if I win, I’ll get a day off and have time to prepare, recharge, and so forth. Honestly, I was genuinely surprised. However, I’m glad they presented me with options, allowing me to pick what suited me best.”

When questioned about her surprise, Sabalenka responded, “I simply don’t recall ever having to handle a situation like this before; it feels like a novel experience. I truly didn’t think it would be a major issue for me to play, and for the night session to simply wait and begin a bit later. Yet, I suppose that decision was ultimately more beneficial for the tournament, likely concerning ticket sales or similar considerations.”

“I am simply pleased that alternatives were available.”

Sabalenka expressed understanding for the difficult decision faced by the tournament directors, stating, “It’s complicated because Alcaraz was also playing, so it was like having two top-ranked players, and they had to decide what to do. I’m just relieved that there were choices.”

Ann Li, currently ranked 39th globally, now holds a season record of 5-8. Sabalenka, however, advanced to 18-1 for the season and is scheduled to compete against Caty McNally in the Round of 32 tomorrow.
