Bickley: Randy Bennett would be a home run hire for ASU

Life in the Valley is excellent, unless your profession happens to be the head men’s basketball coach at Arizona State University.

Is Randy Bennett capable of revitalizing a high-major program burdened by limited potential and a history of underperformance?

Reports indicate Bennett is deep in talks to take over from Bobby Hurley at ASU. While some dismiss his candidacy due to his age (he’ll be 64 this June), suggesting he’s merely seeking a comfortable retirement in Arizona, I strongly disagree with that assessment.

A Mesa native, Bennett has consistently demonstrated his winning capabilities, even with constrained resources. Over 25 years, he’s guided St. Mary’s to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. He established a program known for its international recruiting, a pipeline strong enough to rival Gonzaga’s long-standing mid-major dominance on the West Coast. His consistent success earned him the WCC Coach of the Year title for four consecutive years (2022-25). For ASU, bringing him in would be a phenomenal acquisition.

Perspective is crucial. Although joining the Big 12 has significantly boosted Kenny Dillingham’s football squad, it presents a more challenging path for the basketball program. The team already contends with NIL restrictions, an outdated and aging arena, and an annual budget that’s only half of what the University of Arizona allocates for its basketball team.

Nonetheless, this season saw the Big 12 send eight teams to the NCAA Tournament. This implies ASU’s goal should be to perform like Central Florida, aiming for at least an eighth-place finish in the conference. Bennett possesses the ability to achieve this.

His coaching philosophy produces teams with a signature style. Offensively, they operate with a deliberate, slow pace. Their play can be described as methodically monotonous, effectively lulling opposing defenses into complacency with constant motion and backdoor cuts. Defensively, he employs a pack-line system, a man-to-man strategy that emphasizes strong team help, denying dribble penetration, and compelling opponents to shoot from outside. Essentially:

Bennett has a precise understanding of the player profiles that fit his system, which directly informs his recruiting approach. He is poised to strategically elevate ASU basketball to a significantly more competitive level.

While Bennett’s demeanor might contrast sharply with Dillingham’s youthful enthusiasm, he offers deep local ties and a strong connection to Arizona. He was a standout player at Westwood High School and later played under his father, Tom, at Mesa Community College, where his father established an acclaimed program.

Randy Bennett isn’t a burgeoning star or the latest coaching sensation in college basketball. His personality is reserved, and he won’t captivate a disengaged fan base through rhetoric alone.

However, he is a local figure, highly accomplished, rigorously demanding, and exceptionally capable. And to reiterate a point made by many:

This is Arizona State basketball, a program inherently marked by its challenges and imperfections. For their current head coaching search, Randy Bennett stands distinctly apart from all other candidates.
