Johan Ackermann, head coach for the Vodacom Bulls, faces the prospect of reshuffling his back three in preparation for upcoming URC clashes with Welsh teams.
Having been knocked out of the Investec Champions Cup following a 25-21 defeat by the Glasgow Warriors last week, the Bulls opted to stay in Europe. Their schedule includes matches against the Dragons in Newport on April 17th and the Scarlets in Llanelli on April 25th.
Given Sebastian de Klerk’s season-ending injury, coupled with Kurt-Lee Arendse (dislocated finger) and Cheswill Jooste (foot) sustaining injuries in Scotland, Ackermann acknowledges that achieving the right balance among his outside backs is now a major concern.
In their game against Glasgow, Ackerman utilized David Kriel in the fullback position, while Jooste and Arendse covered the wings.

On the Megafoon Rugby podcast, Ackermann stated, “We possess a formidable back three, and when they’re performing at their best, we aim to maintain that [line-up].”
He added, “The kicking game and contests in the air will consistently play a crucial role. While we want our forwards to control the set-piece and gain ground, it’s then up to our backs to secure aerial balls and manage the kicking game effectively.”
“However, we might be facing an additional hurdle this coming week due to the injuries sustained by Cheswill and Kurt-Lee in our recent match,” he noted.

A key player in any revised back three setup could be the versatile Springbok, Canan Moodie, highly valued for his adaptability.
Ackermann commented, “Canan is a vital asset to our team. His defensive organization and communication are particularly impressive when he plays at inside centre (13).”
Against Glasgow, Moodie partnered with Harold Vorster in the centres, though he has also featured on the wing multiple times throughout the current season.
“He remains one of the top wingers available, but his defensive prowess truly shines at outside centre,” Ackermann clarified. “Now, given the injuries, we must determine the most effective position for him to contribute to the team.”
ACKERS: Real change doesn’t happen overnight
Ackermann emphasized Moodie’s leadership qualities on the field. Despite being just 23, Moodie boasts 72 appearances for the Bulls, 21 Test caps for the Springboks, and was a member of the 2023 World Cup-winning squad.
“He is an integral member of our defensive leadership unit,” the Bulls coach confirmed.
“Cheswill is still developing his skills, and his teammates are providing significant support,” he added.
“Individually, his defense is strong, but within our system, he receives considerable assistance, which is precisely what we expect from our experienced players – to mentor the newer members,” Ackermann concluded.
