Team Canada forward Sam Bennett disclosed on Thursday that an illness prevented him from playing in Wednesday’s thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against Czechia in the quarter-finals.
Having rejoined his teammates for Thursday’s optional skate, Bennett confirmed he’s feeling significantly better and prepared to contribute in any capacity required.
Bennett’s availability could be crucial, especially if captain Sidney Crosby is sidelined for Friday’s semifinal clash against Finland. Crosby, who left Wednesday’s game in the second period due to an apparent lower-body injury, was absent from Thursday’s skate. However, head coach Jon Cooper stated that Crosby has not been officially ruled out for the upcoming semifinal.
“We are approaching this situation day by day and will not jeopardize anyone’s well-being,” Cooper explained. “However, if he’s capable of playing, he absolutely will. We anticipate having a clearer picture within the next 24 hours.”
Prior to missing the quarter-final match, Bennett had also sat out Tuesday’s practice for what the team described as “maintenance.”
Joining the team as a last-minute injury replacement for Anthony Cirelli before the tournament began, Bennett primarily functioned as the 13th forward during the initial three games, recording a single assist.
Additionally, defenceman Josh Morrissey participated in Thursday’s skate, potentially paving the way for his return on Friday after being sidelined for the previous three games due to an undisclosed injury. Travis Sanheim had stepped into his position in the lineup, having himself been a healthy scratch for Canada’s tournament opener against Czechia last week.
