Dominiq Ponder, the quarterback for Colorado, tragically passed away early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle accident, as confirmed by law enforcement. He was 23 years old.
“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo stated. “He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
The Colorado State Patrol reported that the collision occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday within Boulder County. According to police, Ponder, who was operating a 2023 Tesla Model 3, lost control while navigating a curve. The vehicle then crossed the eastbound lane, struck a guardrail, then an electrical pole, before tumbling down an embankment and catching fire.
Ponder was pronounced deceased at the crash site. Authorities indicated that a preliminary inquiry “shows that speed is suspected as a factor,” though a comprehensive investigation is still pending.
Ponder, a third-year sophomore hailing from Opa Locka, Florida, spent his last two seasons with Colorado following a transfer from Bethune-Cookman. He saw action in two games last season, recording two rushes and one pass attempt, after not playing for the Buffaloes during the 2024 season.
“Dom was one of my favorites!” Colorado coach Deion Sanders expressed on X. “He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1.”
Brennan Marion, Colorado’s offensive coordinator, shared Sanders’ message and described Ponder as a joy to coach and be around.
“Getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real,” Marion wrote. “Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!”
Colton Allen, another Colorado quarterback, also offered a remembrance for Ponder on Instagram.
“Dom, you were a blessing to so many people,” Allen posted. “You had a presence about you that just made everything better. You brought so much joy to me and everyone around you. I’m grateful for every lift, every practice, every rep, every conversation we got to share. I’ll carry those with me for the rest of my life.”
The Big 12 Conference also conveyed its sympathies in a message on social media.
Colorado is scheduled to commence its spring practice activities in Boulder on Monday.
Ponder’s high school football career included time at Carol City and Naples in Florida, and he joined Bethune-Cookman after attending Myrtle Beach Collegiate Academy in South Carolina.
