‘Dune 3’ First Look as Timothee Chalamet’s Powerful Return

Prepare for another journey to Arrakis. Timothée Chalamet has unveiled the initial glimpse of “Dune: Part Three,” signaling the grand finale of Denis Villeneuve‘s acclaimed sci-fi trilogy. This upcoming film is slated for release on Dec. 18, putting it in direct competition with “Avengers: Doomsday.” Chalamet shared this preview of his return through an image on his Instagram story.

In 2024’s “Dune: Part Two,” co-written by Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, Chalamet reprised his role as Paul Atreides, the warrior prince and chosen one. His perilous quest alongside his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), continued on the unforgiving desert world of Arrakis. Paul integrated with the indigenous Fremen people and formed a bond with the young warrior Chani (Zendaya), as they united to resist the oppressive Harkonnen empire. Ultimately, Paul vanquished the Harkonnens and ignited a holy war against the Great Houses with his Fremen forces.

The sequel introduced several new actors, including Austin Butler as the antagonist Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken). Léa Seydoux also joined the cast as Lady Margot of the Bene Gesserit. During the “Part Two” press tour, Villeneuve frequently mentioned that a third “Dune” film would expand the roles of Pugh, Seydoux, and Anya-Taylor Joy — who portrayed the future, adult version of Paul’s unborn sister Alia — all of whom made brief appearances in the previous installment. Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck and Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho are set to return for “Dune 3,” which has also cast Robert Pattinson as the villain Scytale.

Legendary Pictures previously announced in August 2024 that a third “Dune” movie was under development, with Villeneuve once again at the helm as director. This film will draw its narrative from Frank Herbert’s second “Dune” novel, “Dune Messiah,” published in 1969.

“Dune: Part Two” secured two Academy Awards from five nominations and achieved a global box office total exceeding $714 million. Even prior to the release of “Dune 2,” Villeneuve confirmed in December 2023 that he was already crafting the screenplay for a potential third “Dune” film.

“Creating a third movie is a dream,” he stated at the time. “It feels like a completely natural progression to me.”

Composer Hans Zimmer shared with Variety in 2024 that he began developing music for the third film concurrently with his work on “Dune 2.”

“Denis walked in on the second day of filming, and without a word, placed ‘Dune Messiah’ on my desk,” Zimmer recalled. “I understood our direction, and that our journey wasn’t complete.”
