DETROIT — Anthony Edwards has been deemed ineligible for NBA postseason awards as he will not meet the 65-game minimum, a decision made after the Minnesota Timberwolves ruled him out of Thursday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons due to a right knee injury and an illness.
He has appeared in 59 games, though only 58 are officially counted toward the league’s game record, with Minnesota having six contests remaining in the regular season.
Edwards did not participate in the Detroit game, which occurred one game after he registered 17 points in 23 minutes during a victory over Dallas, marking his first game in two weeks. He had rejoined the team against the Mavericks following a six-game absence caused by his right knee ailment.
After the 113-108 loss to the Pistons on Thursday, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch stated that Edwards’ illness was the primary reason for his absence from the game.
The four-time All-Star and two-time all-league guard has finished seventh in NBA MVP voting for each of the past two seasons.
Edwards is currently averaging a career-high 29.3 points but will not surpass 70 games played, a feat he accomplished in each of his first five seasons in the league.
