Monkey D. Luffy, widely known simply as Luffy, the protagonist from *One Piece*, is unlikely to be found listening to reggaeton or any melancholic melodies.
In an exclusive chat with Remezcla, Iñaki Godoy, the Mexican actor, and Taz Skylar, the Spanish-British actor—both members of Netflix’s *One Piece* cast—revealed their imaginative playlists for Luffy and Sanji. For Godoy, his choice for Luffy surprisingly sidesteps both the current most celebrated Latine artist and one of Mexico’s most beloved classic romantic ballad singers.
Godoy and Skylar are actively engaged in promoting the forthcoming season of *One Piece*. Last month, Godoy participated in Mexican lucha libre and devoted an entire day to *One Piece*-themed events with his fanbase in Mexico City. More recently, last week (March 6), both actors were part of the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan, where Godoy even threw a ceremonial pitch alongside other cast members as part of the series’ promotion. Beyond these unconventional, widespread promotional endeavors, they’ve also participated in conventional press junkets, offering unique insights into their characters, Luffy and Sanji.
Remezcla had the opportunity to step into the *One Piece* universe at Netflix’s studios in Hollywood, CA, on February 26. To delve deeper into the live-action Luffy’s eclectic tastes, we asked Godoy which Latine artist his character would enjoy. Responding with Skylar, Godoy stated: “I think Luffy would connect with mariachi music and similar genres, largely because he appreciates the instruments and their sounds. I don’t think he’d enjoy artists like José José; it’s too sad for him. I believe he’d prefer uplifting music focused on celebration.”
As Godoy answered, Skylar interjected his own suggestion, positing that Luffy would be "jamming" to Bad Bunny. Godoy reacted, “Bad Bunny? Uhhh, you think so? I think he’s more into ‘El mariachi loco quiere bailar,’ or like ‘Ya llego Sergio el Bailador,’—you know, wedding music. I think that’s what Luffy likes. Like whatever they play at weddings, when people are dancing to cumbias and all that kind of stuff.”
During the same conversation, Skylar also shared his thoughts on what his live-action character, Sanji, would listen to. He believes Sanji would gravitate towards Cuban salsa musicians like Fresto. Skylar played “Me Hace Daño Verte,” showcasing the tropical vibe he imagined Sanji would be drawn to. He enthusiastically added, “¡Un temazo! [What a song!]”
The series *One Piece: Into the Grand Line* is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
