Considering their projected draft position, it wouldn’t be shocking if the most significant move made by the Atlanta Falcons this weekend is trading tight end Kyle Pitts. So, which team might be inclined to acquire the former top-five selection?
Thus far, the only team associated with a potential Pitts trade involving the Falcons is the Kansas City Chiefs. They are in need of a successor for Travis Kelce, whose performance has seen a noticeable decline since his peak. One proposed scenario had Atlanta gaining second and fourth-round picks from Kansas City, a transaction they should definitely make if offered.
Now, an even more enticing possibility has emerged. John Breech from CBS Sports presents a trade that would net the Falcons a first-round pick (No. 29 overall) from the Chiefs.
“The Falcons would probably consider this agreement for a couple of reasons: Firstly, they lack a first-round pick this year, and this would allow them to re-enter the initial round,” Breech noted. “Secondly, Pitts is slated to play under the franchise tag, valued at $15 million in 2026. Trading him would instantly free up that $15 million in salary cap space.”
Securing a first-round pick along with $15 million in cap space is excellent. Furthermore, it spares the Falcons from committing to a costly long-term contract for Pitts, who, despite a solid 2025 season, has generally underperformed expectations.
Some NFL franchise will undoubtedly invest in Pitts, recognizing his occasional brilliant plays, and offer him a top-tier tight end salary. However, Atlanta isn’t obligated to be that team. Should any organization propose a first-round pick for Pitts (even if it’s the Seahawks at pick No. 32), Ian Cunningham, Matt Ryan, and their team should eagerly seize the opportunity.
