Gov. Whitmer declares state of emergency for Marquette, Iron Counties

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – On Monday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Iron and Marquette counties.

Whitmer indicated this decision stems from severe flooding that has rendered roads impassable. The governor first issued a state of emergency for Cheboygan County on April 10, with thirty-seven additional Michigan counties, including Menominee County in the U.P., being added over the following two days.

This state of emergency signifies that Whitmer has authorized the deployment of all available state resources to support local response and recovery efforts.

“Today, I am adding two more counties to our recent emergency declarations. This action will aid Marquette and Iron counties with their ongoing recovery efforts,” Whitmer stated. “As water levels across Michigan stabilize and recede, my administration will continue to collaborate with local communities to ensure they receive the assistance they need. I extend my gratitude to every first responder who stepped up to safeguard Michiganders and their property. Let’s persist in our collective work to recover from and repair the damage.”

The declaration further permits eligible communities to seek financial assistance under Section 19 of Michigan’s Emergency Management Act, Public Act 390 of 1976, as amended. This funding helps local governments cover emergency response expenses and repair public infrastructure damaged by the storms.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is orchestrating the state’s emergency response through the SEOC. MSP troopers are actively on the ground assisting local emergency response efforts.
