At 83 years old, Harrison Ford remains one of the most productive actors of his era, currently recognized with an Emmy nomination for his role in the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking.
His breakthrough came nearly five decades ago, notably as Han Solo in the Star Warsfranchise in 1977, but his path took over 35 years to reach that point, having trained as a carpenter in his twenties to support his family.
However, acting proved to be his true calling. “I wasn’t a good student,” he once confided to Parade. “I read the initial part of the description, which mentioned reading and discussing plays, and that seemed fine. I missed the latter part, which stipulated participation in plays, so that came as a bit of a surprise.
“I tended to be quite solitary, and this was the inaugural group of individuals with whom I felt entirely at ease — comprising, as expected, the customary collection of eccentric, unconventional, and peculiar characters found in the acting community.”
Star Wars Earnings
For his portrayal of Han Solo in the inaugural Star Wars film, Harrison reportedly received only about $10,000 (which equates to $52,000 today). At the time, he was an emerging actor, and the studio held reservations about the movie’s potential success. Naturally, the film spawned two immediate sequels, followed by six more installments, and numerous spin-offs.
While Harrison did not feature in the prequel films starring Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor, reports from 2015 indicated he secured $25 million for his appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Disney subsequently disputed these figures, with unnamed sources informing Variety that his compensation was closer to $15 million. Nevertheless, Harrison held the highest-paid actor status on set, largely due to Disney’s unique “legacy pay scale,” designed to entice Harrison, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill to reprise their original iconic roles.
Though Han met his end in that film, Disney executives sought his return once more for The Rise of Skywalker, a move Harrison notoriously resisted.
His exact earnings for this appearance have never been verified, but his well-known reservations likely secured him another substantial payment.
Indiana Jones: Eight-Figure Payouts
In 1980, riding on the success of the initial Star Wars film, Harrison was chosen to star in George Lucas’s first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, for which he earned a total of $5.9 million.
He earned $4.5 million and $4.9 million for the subsequent two films in the franchise, but his return in 2007 commanded a remarkable $65 million payment.
Sci-fi Endeavors
During the early 1980s, Harrison also featured in Blade Runner, which was initially a box office disappointment, grossing $14 million against a budget of $28 million, though reports indicate Harrison’s salary was approximately $1.65 million.
Three decades afterward, he eagerly returned to Deckard’s universe; director Ridley Scott recounted Harrison describing the script as “the finest thing I’ve ever encountered,” and Ford once quipped he was paid “sacks of cash” for the sequel.
Television Ventures
Harrison made the unusual choice to enter the television landscape in 2022, accepting a role opposite Dame Helen Mirren in the Yellowstone spin-off 1923. According to Variety, the actor commanded an impressive $1 million per episode for its first season. He reprised his character for a second season, appearing in a total of 15 episodes.
In 2023, he joined Jason Segel in the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking. While his salary has never been disclosed, he shared with Vanity Fair that the satisfaction stems from “collaborating with talented and experienced individuals.”
Estimated Net Worth
Cumulatively, Harrison’s net worth is estimated to exceed $300 million.
