‘He can neither smash the bowling, nor anchor the innings’

Cricket pundit Kris Srikkanth recently cast doubt on Ajinkya Rahane’s place within the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad, particularly looking ahead to their initial IPL 2026 fixture. This crucial match is scheduled against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday, March 29, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Rahane is poised to captain KKR for the second consecutive season. Although he was the top scorer for KKR last year, the three-time champions concluded their campaign in a disappointing eighth position. Despite assembling a stronger team this year, Srikkanth expressed concerns that Rahane might occupy a critical spot at the top of the batting order, arguing that he possesses neither the ability to accelerate scoring nor to anchor an innings effectively.

“Ajinkya Rahane poses a significant challenge for them. By opening, he effectively monopolizes that position. His inclusion is purely due to his captaincy role. When you consider his batting, he’s incapable of either hitting big shots or playing a stabilizing role like Virat Kohli. While he impressed everyone in 2023, his performance had been subpar for an extended period before that. This is the crucial weak point for KKR,” Srikkanth remarked in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

“What is the value he is going to add as a player?” – Kris Srikkanth on Ajinkya Rahane

Srikkanth reiterated his apprehension that KKR could face difficulties with Rahane leading the batting from the top. He pointed out Rahane’s inconsistent form since the 2023 IPL season, where his dynamic batting was instrumental in the Chennai Super Kings’ championship victory.

“His presence, and potentially his opening slot, is solely due to the mandatory nature of his captaincy. Even in the previous season, his contributions to KKR weren’t particularly outstanding. He’s playing as captain, but what tangible value does he bring as a player? He performed exceptionally for CSK in 2023, helping them clinch the title. However, he hasn’t delivered anything noteworthy in the past two years. This predicament is precisely where KKR finds itself,” Srikkanth stated (referencing the aforementioned source).

KKR currently boasts two in-form opening batsmen in Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. However, if Rahane assumes the opening role, it’s likely that only one of these two would secure a spot in the starting XI. The KKR captain, nonetheless, is expected to disregard external critiques for now and concentrate on delivering his utmost for the Kolkata-based franchise.
