Aryna Sabalenka currently enjoys a significant lead over her competitors in the official WTA Rankings, yet an alternative ranking system indicates her dominance might not be as pronounced.
Intriguingly, Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula rank higher than Iga Swiatek on this alternative list, with Swiatek having dropped several spots. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff appears considerably lower than her standing in the WTA rankings.
As the WTA 1000 tournament at Indian Wells unfolds, we delve into how the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system assesses the elite athletes in women’s tennis.
What is the UTR ranking system?
Unlike the WTA Rankings, which accumulate points over a 52-week period, the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system utilizes an algorithm that prioritizes more recent match outcomes and victories against opponents of superior ranking.
The UTR Rating system is accessible to tennis players across all proficiency levels. Every participant, irrespective of their age, gender, location, or skill, is evaluated on a unified scale ranging from 1.00 to 16.50, determined by their match performances.
Only matches played within the preceding 12 months contribute to a player’s rating. The algorithm considers a player’s most recent 30 matches (or fewer, if they have played less than 30 within the past year).

The women’s UTR ratings
Sabalenka has been inactive since her loss to Rybakina in the Australian Open final at the end of January, with the Brisbane International earlier in 2023 being her only other tournament appearance. The current world No. 1 commands 10,675 points in the WTA Rankings, establishing a significant 3,087-point lead over the second-ranked Swiatek.
Furthermore, the Belarusian star leads the UTR ratings with a score of 13.26, though Rybakina stands as her nearest competitor on this alternative ranking.
Rybakina, fresh off her maiden Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open earlier this year, trails closely behind Sabalenka with a UTR rating of 13.21.
Jessica Pegula has ascended to third on the UTR list, two positions higher than her current WTA ranking. This rise follows her triumph at the WTA 1000 event in Dubai last month, which boosted her UTR rating to 12.99. The American also reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Australian Open.
Swiatek, whose campaigns at both the Australian Open and the Dubai Championships concluded in the quarter-finals, now holds a 12.97 rating, causing her to drop to the No. 4 position.
Amanda Anisimova, currently holding the sixth spot on the official women’s tour rankings, secures fifth place on the UTR list with a rating of 12.91.
Despite being ranked world No. 4 by the WTA, Coco Gauff is positioned eighth by UTR, with a rating of 12.83, placing her behind both Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova.
