‘It’s a Complicated Rights Issue’

Vincent D’Onofrio is urging Marvel and Sony to untangle the bureaucratic issues so that his “Daredevil: Born Again” character, the villainous crime lord Kingpin, can confront his long-standing comic book adversary, Spider-Man, on the silver screen.

In a social media response to a fan advocating for a live-action clash between Spidey and Kingpin, D’Onofrio commented, “If Sony and Marvel ever get their sh*t together maybe. It’s a complicated rights issue. Hope so.”

While D’Onofrio’s Kingpin is part of Disney and Marvel’s intellectual property, Sony maintains the film rights to the iconic web-slinger. Nevertheless, the studio licenses the character to Marvel, allowing him to appear in movies such as “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Kingpin and Spider-Man have technically shared the screen in a film, which was the 2018 animated feature “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Liev Schreiber lent his voice to Kingpin, who engaged in conflict with Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales.

D’Onofrio was most recently featured as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, in the latest season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which premiered on Disney+ Tuesday evening. In this new season, Fisk assumes the role of New York City’s mayor, inciting civil unrest with the assistance of his heavily armed Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

The highly anticipated “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will mark the next appearance of Holland’s iconic hero. Set to hit theaters on July 31, the film’s cast also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. It is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. This sequel picks up after the events of 2021’s “No Way Home,” where the entire world forgot Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man.

Sony unveiled the trailer for “Brand New Day” on March 17. In just four days, it garnered over 1 billion views, becoming the first movie trailer in history to achieve such a milestone.
