Kostyuk rolls past Pegula in Madrid third round

A decisive moment arrived at the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday as Marta Kostyuk and Jessica Pegula, two of the season’s inaugural clay-court champions on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, battled for a coveted spot in the Round of 16.

Both athletes entered the match with flawless 6-0 records on clay surfaces in WTA events this spring, having previously claimed titles in Rouen and Charleston, respectively, and secured victories in their second-round encounters. After 1 hour and 13 minutes on Arantxa Sanchez Stadium, Kostyuk emerged triumphant with a 6-1, 6-4 win, thereby extending her impressive winning streak.

“It took me many years to truly learn how to play in Madrid,” Kostyuk shared with reporters. “The conditions here are quite challenging and unique. I’m pleased with my tactical approach today and how effectively I utilized my strengths.”

“Currently, I tend to view each tournament individually because the conditions vary so much. For me, this isn’t genuine clay, nor is Rouen. True clay is probably found in Rome or Paris, but the rest of the season features a very different kind of clay that I didn’t grow up playing on, so I’ve had to adapt.”

With this, her 13th career Top 10 victory, Kostyuk advances to face Pegula’s compatriot, Caty McNally, vying for a place in the quarterfinals. While Kostyuk aims for her second consecutive quarterfinal appearance in Madrid, McNally has reached the fourth round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career, having saved two match points en route to a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2) victory over Katerina Siniakova.

Additional insights and statistics from Kostyuk’s win include:

2: After losing four of her initial five matches against Pegula, Kostyuk has now secured two consecutive wins in their head-to-head. She also defeated Pegula 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Brisbane International in January.

3: Kostyuk registered three consecutive game wins on three separate occasions during her victory. She won the first three and the final three games of the opening set, and also achieved this from being 1-0 down in the second set.

4: The Ukrainian converted four of her seven break-point opportunities against Pegula.

8: Including a recent win over Magda Linette in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers for Ukraine, Kostyuk is now on an eight-match, career-long winning streak. Her previous best, after securing her maiden career title in Austin three years ago, was halted at five matches.

10: In total, Kostyuk saved 10 of the 11 break points she faced—including all nine in the opening set. Four of these saves occurred during a five-deuce service hold for 3-0, and she then saved two more in both the fifth and seventh games.

20: Kostyuk amassed 20 winners in the match, significantly outnumbering Pegula’s nine.

“I think this was a valuable wake-up call for me to start thinking more strategically out there,” Pegula told the press. “Although I felt good hitting the ball, I don’t believe I played very smartly. I wasn’t executing the right patterns I needed to.”

“I was simply dissatisfied with the strategy I was employing.”

27: Kostyuk proved particularly effective when returning Pegula’s second serves. The American managed to win only 27% of those points throughout the match.

“I thought it was a good match,” Kostyuk stated in her on-court interview. “I’ve already played Jessica this year, and she’s an incredibly tough and consistent player, so I entered this match fully prepared for an intense battle. I’m absolutely delighted to have finished it in two sets.”

“I believe I’m truly enjoying playing tennis again since my injury at the Australian Open. It forced me to re-evaluate my approach and consider the toll being on court takes on me – my energy, my physical energy. I’m very pleased with the adjustments we’ve made, and I’m very happy with the progress our team is achieving, which I think is what truly matters.”

“I’ve never had such an extended winning streak in my career, so we must be doing something right!”
