This year’s Winter Games have placed significant pressure on athletes, particularly those representing the United States.
However, where prominent figures like Ilia Malinin and Mikaela Shiffrin have seemingly struggled with the intense spotlight, Team USA’s speed skating phenom Jordan Stolz has truly flourished.
In only his second Olympics, the 21-year-old has already claimed two gold medals in the two events he’s entered. He first achieved glory in the 1000m, setting an Olympic record, then followed it with a 500m victory, breaking another Olympic benchmark.
This success sets a daunting standard for his competitors, as he still has the opportunity to claim two more individual gold medals at Milan Cortina in both the 1500m event and the mass start.
Given his impressive track record in recent years, it’s no surprise that Stolz was expected to shine on the global stage. Yet, unlike many who would, and have, faltered under such immense pressure, Stolz has only elevated his performance.
Prior to heading to Milan, the American athlete spoke with CNN Sports and addressed his reputation as the one to beat.
“I quite enjoy it,” he stated. “It’s preferable to being the hunter. I’d rather be the one hunted because it signifies you’re performing well and achieving victories.”
