Despite their five-game winning streak coming to an end with a 5-1 loss to the Golden Knights on Saturday, the Oilers are determined to leverage their collective efforts for a final push toward the Pacific Division title. They have managed this by having the entire roster elevate their performance to compensate for the recent absences of star players Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman.
“We’ve certainly progressed positively and are playing more cohesively as a team,” remarked Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “Everyone shares the same outlook and approach on the ice. Clearly, we have some work ahead in the next five games to firmly establish our position, but I believe it’s truly coming together.”
For the Oilers, crucial elements in stifling the Mammoth’s potent offense will involve limiting their rush chances and maintaining high speed on the forecheck to disrupt loose pucks. Simultaneously, they must find a method to revitalize their power play, which has struggled, converting only 1 of 19 opportunities in the nine games Draisaitl has been unavailable.
“If you consider the scoring opportunities we’ve generated almost every night, we’ve had numerous quality chances, yet the pucks aren’t finding the back of the net currently,” Nugent-Hopkins commented regarding the power play. “It’s evident that Leon significantly alters the dynamic for us there. He consistently finds ways to score and engineer those high-percentage plays. Still, we’ve had plenty of good looks.”
“We must discover ways to capitalize and perhaps create more second-chance opportunities to build upon. However, we won’t allow frustration to set in. We’ll simply persevere, continue taking shots, and eventually, they will start going in.”
