I doubt Eldridge will start the season with the main squad. He needs at least half a season of AAA plate appearances before potentially joining the big league team. I suspect Matos’s performance in Spring Training hasn’t been enough to secure him a spot on the 26-man roster. That’s life…

As I mentioned before Spring Training, there’s a good chance he’ll begin the season in AAA, and I don’t believe his recent play has justified a roster spot. He really needs to reduce his strikeouts.

I wish I could feel more confident about Eldridge, but I’m not convinced. When he’s not striking out, he’s often hitting “loud outs.” While that’s something, it shouldn’t be at the expense of Matos or Encarnacion, who are out of minor league options, or McCray, given his impressive speed and defense.

Absolutely not. He’s not prepared. He shouldn’t have been on the team last season; it felt like a move to generate fan buzz after the Giants had fallen out of the playoff race. I still think he has the potential to be an excellent player. Let him begin in AAA – it also simplifies other roster decisions.
