Veteran winger Jeff Skinner was placed on unconditional waivers by the San Jose Sharks on Monday, initiating the process of contract termination.
Should Skinner successfully clear waivers, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.
This season, the 33-year-old forward recorded six goals and 13 points across 32 games for the Sharks. His last game with the team was on January 11th, after which he was a healthy scratch leading up to the Olympic break.
Skinner signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Sharks in July, having previously played with the Edmonton Oilers under identical terms.
In his last season with the Oilers, he accumulated 16 goals and 29 points over 72 games. During Edmonton’s journey to the Stanley Cup Final, he contributed an additional goal and two points in five playoff appearances.
Skinner, who was the seventh overall pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2010 draft, boasts a career total of 379 goals and 712 points across 1,110 games, spanning his time with the Hurricanes, Buffalo Sabres, Oilers, and Sharks.
A five-time 30-goal scorer, Skinner achieved a career-high of 40 goals with the Sabres during the 2018-19 season. His most recent 30-goal campaign also occurred in Buffalo, in 2022-23.
In the 2010-11 season, Skinner earned the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, following an impressive performance where he scored 31 goals and tallied 63 points in 82 games while playing for the Hurricanes.
