Sources have confirmed to ESPN that Oregon State plans to appoint Justin Joyner, currently an assistant coach at Michigan, as its next head coach.
Joyner has served under Dusty May for the Wolverines for the past two seasons, playing a role in transforming the team into a national championship contender this year. Following an 8-24 record the season before May’s arrival, they achieved a 27-10 record last year, reaching the Sweet 16.
This season, they boast a 29-2 record, having secured the Big Ten regular-season title outright by a margin of four games, and are on track for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Before joining May’s coaching staff, Joyner spent seven seasons at Saint Mary’s, where he was mentored by Randy Bennett. During his tenure in Moraga, the Gaels compiled a 171-60 record and participated in four NCAA tournaments.
A native of California who played collegiate basketball at UC Santa Barbara, Joyner steps in for Wayne Tinkle, who was dismissed after 12 seasons leading the program in Corvallis. Under Tinkle’s leadership, Oregon State secured two NCAA tournament bids, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2021.
Oregon State, which has competed in the West Coast Conference for the past two seasons following the dissolution of the previous Pac-12, is set to rejoin a full Pac-12 schedule next season. The Beavers will share the newly configured league with Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah State, and Washington State.
