Kevin McGonigle, the promising Detroit Tigers star and ESPN’s second-ranked prospect for the 2026 season, has secured a spot on the Opening Day roster, the team confirmed Tuesday.
McGonigle, a 21-year-old infielder celebrated for his excellent hitting and valuable defensive and baserunning skills, was selected 37th overall in the 2023 draft. He has yet to play above the Double-A level, where he participated in just 46 games last year.
“Our focus was entirely on baseball,” manager A.J. Hinch informed reporters on Tuesday. “It was all about winning. We repeatedly came back to the goal of winning as many games as possible. We aim to win the World Series. If Kevin McGonigle helps us achieve that …
“There’s still significant progress to be made. He remains a developing talent. That growth must continue in the major leagues. We believe the groundwork and routines he established during spring training are strong enough for him to join the team.”
He delivered a solid performance during spring training, batting .250 with two home runs, six RBIs, 11 walks, and two stolen bases across 44 at-bats. He also hit a massive 461-foot home run off Dominican Republic pitcher Luis Severino in an exhibition game before the World Baseball Classic. Defensively, he saw action this spring at shortstop (10 games) and third base (7).
“He consistently demonstrated his composure under pressure and held his own,” Hinch stated. “His plate appearances were as impressive as anticipated. His defense was particularly notable, especially the details of his initial step, pre-pitch preparation, and play completion.
“He never appeared uncomfortable throughout the spring, though he will admit there were some anxious moments. And he should be nervous. He’s 21 and has never experienced this level of scrutiny, despite being one of baseball’s top prospects.”
The Tigers will commence their season on the road against the San Diego Padres this Thursday.
