Figure skating Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu has openly and assertively commented on her personal image and sense of self.
During a recent interview, conducted as part of her expanding collaboration with Nike, the 20-year-old renowned figure skater revealed a newfound resolve to decline opportunities that don’t align with her, particularly those suggesting she alter her authentic self.
“Nowadays, I find myself rejecting more propositions than I once accepted,” Liu stated. “Upon my return to competitive skating, I was advised to change my hairstyle, to which I firmly responded, ‘No, my hair will remain as it is.’”

This declaration indicates a distinct change in Liu’s perspective; after a hiatus, she re-entered competitive skating with a revitalized sense of direction and command over her professional path.
Liu’s decision to keep her hair as is might appear minor, yet in figure skating, presentation has historically been integral to the sport’s ethos. Competitors are frequently anticipated to embody a specific aesthetic: refined, graceful, and conventional.
Liu has actively pushed back against this notion.
Through her unique hairstyle and confident fashion selections, she has cultivated an image of uninhibited self-expression. Her distinctive style has garnered admiration from her fanbase, particularly younger spectators who view her as an emblem of personal identity.
Her recent public appearances beyond the rink, notably a widely shared Oscars weekend ensemble, have further cemented this persona. Social media was inundated with fan responses, frequently commending her confidence and singular fashion sense.
However, for Liu, her aim isn’t to draw attention purely for the sake of it. Rather, it’s about remaining authentic to who she is.
“While I consider song recommendations, if I don’t genuinely connect with a piece, I won’t perform to it,” she clarified. “My desire is to make selections that truly resonate with my identity.”
Liu’s remarks arrive at a pivotal juncture in her professional trajectory. Having secured Olympic gold at the Milano Cortina Games, she achieved a milestone as the first American woman in more than twenty years to accomplish this feat.
Her path has been decidedly unconventional.
Initially, she gained prominence as a child prodigy, claiming a national championship at merely 13. Nevertheless, the intense demands of high-level competition prompted her to withdraw from the sport during her teenage years. Upon her return almost two years afterward, she did so with a transformed outlook, prioritizing personal fulfillment and self-expression over external pressures.
This strategy yielded significant success. Not only did she clinch the Olympic gold medal, but she also emerged as one of the globe’s most discussed athletes.
Currently, through her new collaboration with Nike, Liu is entering a more expansive public arena that merges athletics, style, and cultural influence. The promotional effort showcases her in forthcoming footwear and honors her evolution from a competitor to a worldwide icon.
Notwithstanding her increasing renown, Liu steadfastly adheres to her core values.
She disclosed that cultivating trust in her own intuition has been fundamental to her development, both as an athlete and as an individual.
“Ultimately, if a decision doesn’t elicit an enthusiastic ‘hell yes,’ then it’s a definite ‘hell no,’” Liu remarked, elucidating her current decision-making process in both her personal and professional life.
