As his fans know, Harry Styles frequently includes specific names in his songs, though he seldom provides explanations. However, “Carla’s Song,” the concluding track on his latest album, marks a distinct exception. Recently, the British pop sensation shared details with Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview regarding the inspiration behind the title and lyrics.
It turns out the song’s namesake is one of Styles’s friends, aptly named Carla. “Carla, in many respects, really became the most vital element of the album for me,” the singer confided in Lowe. He further elaborated that the track “resolved numerous questions” he had about his motivations for creating music and his passion for performing. It served as a reminder of “a moment when you first heard a song that ignited a desire to engage with music, in some form.”
Styles recounted a specific evening when Carla and their group of friends were at someone’s house before an after-party, and she mentioned her recent discovery of Paul Simon. Styles, who grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel, was already a devoted fan. “During my earlier years, living in a pub, there was a four-CD changer that, I believe, consistently held the ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ album throughout my stay,” he told Lowe.
That night, with Carla and their companions, Styles decided to introduce her to “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” sensing she might appreciate it. This interaction proved to be a profoundly impactful experience for both individuals.
“Observing her reaction to hearing that song for the very first time was akin to witnessing someone experience a revelation, or like discovering pure enchantment,” Styles remarked. “There was something in that moment that brought home what one truly invests in by creating music—songs that transcend generations.” He also shared Simon and Garfunkel’s “Kathy’s Song” with her, which ultimately served as the naming inspiration for “Carla’s Song.”
Styles articulated to Lowe how this encounter illuminated the profound essence of music creation, noting that “perhaps someone listens to one of your songs and thinks, ‘This song will be a part of my life indefinitely.’ That, in essence, is the goal. That’s truly sufficient. I genuinely don’t seek anything more.”
The complete lyrics for the song are provided below.
There is a bridge that leads to troubled waters
If you know, then you know
If you don’t, then you don’t, it’s heavenly
From your head to your toes
Saw the light and the gold that you discoverThrough your eyes, in awe, melodies like a tide
It’s all waiting there for you
It’s all waiting there for you
Can you hear that voice
Delivering the news?
It’s all waiting there for you
Ignorance or innocence
Call it what you wannaYou’ve been a baby sleeping upon a candy bar
Till your eyes open on the changing summer light
It’s all waiting there for you
Can you hear that voice
Delivering the news?
It’s all waiting there for you
It’s all waiting there for you
Call it what you wanna
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytimeIt’s all waiting there for you
It’s all waiting there for youI know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind (It’s all there waiting for you)
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind (It’s all there waiting)
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime (It’s all there waiting for you)
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, I know I can read your mind
I know what you like, I know what you’ll really like
I know what you like, you can hear it anytime
