With the Buffalo Bills’ defense transitioning into a new phase, the future role of seasoned nickel cornerback Taron Johnson has become a topic of discussion.
Speculation has arisen regarding his considerable $11.4 million salary cap charge for 2026 (according to Spotrac), coupled with doubts about his adaptability to the Bills’ revamped defensive strategy.
However, after hearing Aaron Rodgers’ comments, it becomes difficult to imagine defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard not valuing Johnson’s contributions.
Under former head coach Sean McDermott, Johnson established himself as a key defensive player for the Bills. The 2018 fourth-round selection was so proficient against both the run and the pass that Buffalo essentially adopted the nickel package as its primary defensive alignment.
“Buffalo, I believe, utilized the nickel defense more than any other team, adapting it to every personnel package, simply because Taron Johnson is among the league’s elite players,” said Rodgers during his recent Pat McAfee Show segment. “He’s genuinely one of the most undervalued talents, capable of performing as a box linebacker to halt rushes and also effectively covering receivers.”

Proven Performance
Despite playing his lowest snap count (570) in six seasons during 2025, the 29-year-old Johnson continued to be a crucial component of McDermott’s defensive strategy.
Last December, Johnson recorded three solo tackles in the Week 13 away victory against Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. A year prior, in 2024, his game-clinching interception secured a 23-20 road triumph over Rodgers and the New York Jets.

Bills’ general manager Brandon Beane remarked at the NFL Combine, “He’s primarily a nickel corner, but given our defensive structure, he’s essentially functioned as a hybrid WILL linebacker.”
Since his 2018 draft selection, 114 picks after Josh Allen, Johnson has participated in 113 games, starting 87 of them. Annually, he averages 71.5 tackles, accumulating 48 defended passes and eight forced fumbles throughout his career.
Possible Role Adjustment
Johnson, who earned All-Pro honors in 2023, is contracted until 2027. Given that releasing him this season would incur a substantial $9.5 million dead cap hit, it appears unlikely the Bills will part ways with the adaptable defensive back.
Beane commented, “We hold a great deal of admiration and respect for Taron. We are currently evaluating how he will be utilized in Jim’s defense. The primary question is the extent of his playing time, as we previously had him on the field for nearly 90 percent of snaps. We need to determine if Jim envisions him playing a similar amount or if he might opt for another linebacker in that role more frequently.”

A potential switch to the safety position is also a possibility.
Beane affirmed, “No options are being excluded. We are considering all possibilities in these decisions. He’s a talented football player, so if we believe a particular position best suits him, we wouldn’t dismiss it.”
