Bruce Branch III latest 5-star recruit to choose BYU

Bruce Branch III, a highly-touted senior ranked in the top 10 nationally, has officially committed to BYU, marking head coach Kevin Young’s third successive recruiting class to feature a five-star talent.

The announcement of Branch’s decision came on Tuesday during ESPN’s NBA Today broadcast.

After reclassifying from the 2027 cohort to the current senior class last November, Branch quickly saw BYU establish itself as the frontrunner for his commitment. While he did make a recent visit to USC, the Cougars have consistently been viewed as his probable choice throughout the winter months.

Speaking to ESPN, Branch explained his decision, stating, “I wanted to go to a place that felt like a family, had great academics, and was really focused on basketball. I can see myself leading this team to a championship. It just felt right.”

Since assuming coaching duties in Provo in 2024, Young’s strategy for BYU has significantly emphasized constructing rosters centered on formidable wings, a trend initiated with Egor Demin in the 2024-25 season and continued with AJ Dybantsa this current season. Branch, standing at 6-foot-7, represents the next iteration of this successful approach.

Branch articulated his understanding of BYU’s vision: “Their plan is to put me in a position to be the best version of myself,” he shared. “Coach talked about his experience coaching my archetype and how the type of player I am can be very successful in his system, and how it leads to winning, which is most important to me.”

According to Branch, Coach Young has presented a clear developmental roadmap for his tenure in Provo, citing previous successes like Demin and Dybantsa as prime illustrations.

“He has a concrete plan in place that makes sense to me and is very clearly defined,” Branch affirmed. “I will be held accountable and develop every day. That’s the position I want to be in.

“I believe my capacity to create opportunities for teammates, to hit three-pointers off the dribble, from pick-and-rolls, or in catch-and-shoot scenarios, resonates with Coach Young, reminding him of successful players he’s coached previously,” Branch elaborated. “He often mentions Devin Booker, AJ, and Egor Denim. Combined with my defensive strengths, this aligns with what Coach Young seeks in an athlete.”

Previously recognized as the No. 2 prospect in the 2027 class, Branch’s reclassification into the 2026 group now places him at No. 6 in the SC Next 100 rankings. Having celebrated his 17th birthday in October, the talented product from Prolific Prep (Florida) is now eligible for the 2027 NBA draft due to his recent reclassification.

During the previous spring and summer, competing for the Compton Magic program on the Adidas 3SSB circuit, Branch posted averages of 15.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, alongside an impressive 39% shooting accuracy from beyond the arc, as reported by Synergy. This season at Prolific, he continues to demonstrate his perimeter prowess, connecting on 38% of his three-point attempts.

Branch exhibits a remarkable combination of length and offensive versatility, particularly striking for a large wing player. His scoring ability spans all areas of the court, and he possesses the potential to evolve into a secondary ball handler down the line. As he refines his use of leverage and physical build against smaller opponents, Branch is poised to enhance his ball-handling skills. He demonstrates proficiency in catch-and-shoot situations and effectively attacks closeouts, enabling him to execute his midrange pull-up or drive aggressively to the basket.

On the defensive end, his substantial 7-foot-1 wingspan, coupled with his agility and commitment to staying in front of ball handlers, suggests considerable potential for growth.

Branch’s commitment rounds out the third spot in BYU’s current recruiting class, joining former G League center Abdullah Ahmed, who advanced to join the team this year, and junior college transfer KJ Perry, who enrolled ahead of schedule and is redshirting. The Cougars’ 2026 roster also still includes SC Next 100 forward Dean Rueckert and local center talent Will Openshaw.
