Charles Barkley Advises Parents to ‘Spank’ Their Kids to Avoid Raising the ‘Brats That We Got Today’

Charles Barkley openly advocates for physically disciplining children, suggesting that other parents should also embrace this approach.

On Monday, March 23, the 63-year-old Barkley offered his views on the NBA during a segment on The Dan Patrick Show. The retired NBA icon, who played for teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets, commented, “Players wield an excessive amount of influence today. It’s absurd. You’re even prevented from raising your voice at them. Correcting someone vocally when they make a mistake is simply part of coaching.”

The commentator further asserted, “People argue that you shouldn’t yell at your children. Absolutely, you can yell at your kids. And you can physically discipline them as well.”

Following the host’s challenge, remarking, “I don’t believe that’s permissible,” the actor from Space Jam recounted a personal anecdote from his youth.

“One year, I regretfully acquired those Hot Wheels racetracks,” Barkley explained, adding that his grandmother repurposed it as “a tool for discipline.” He then advised, “Truly, that was among my worst choices. Children, avoid those Hot Wheels racetracks at all costs.”

“I’m not advocating for parents to physically assault their children,” the retired athlete clarified. “However, I believe that without spanking and proper discipline, children risk becoming the unruly individuals we often see nowadays. I am not endorsing child abuse. But without such measures, how will children learn to discern right from wrong?”

Barkley has one daughter, Christiana, with his wife Maureen Blumhardt. As of 2023, he is also a grandfather to two.
