Exclusive: Trump is preparing to replace Ric Grenell as head of the Kennedy Center

President Donald Trump is anticipated to dismiss Richard Grenell from his role as the head of the Kennedy Center, according to information from three informed sources.

This action coincides with the arts and culture establishment, now bearing Trump’s name on its exterior, facing an expected two-year closure for refurbishments as the president endeavors to reshape it according to his vision.

The announcement regarding Grenell’s departure might occur as early as today, two of the sources indicated.

Grenell’s provisional leadership of the Kennedy Center, commencing in February 2025, has been characterized by turbulence, experiencing significant performance cancellations, demonstrations, reduced ticket revenues, and financial difficulties as he strived to implement the president’s artistic agenda.

Despite a previously amicable relationship between Trump and Grenell, a steadfast supporter who has held various positions throughout the president’s two terms, the president had grown displeased with a series of unfavorable media reports concerning his overhaul of the cultural institution, sources revealed.

A source knowledgeable about the White House’s perspective mentioned that while the president favored Grenell, he believed Grenell had mismanaged his responsibilities at the Kennedy Center, particularly regarding public relations.

A White House official maintained that Grenell was not being terminated but that his role was always meant to be temporary, assisting during the Kennedy Center’s transitional phase before stepping down.

During his leadership of the Kennedy Center, Grenell frequently defied established artistic conventions, challenging norms that had been in place for decades, which critics argue has led to considerable strain and irreversible damage to the institution.

Colleagues described Grenell as aggressive, confrontational, and stubborn. A source close to the Kennedy Center lamented that Grenell lacked experience or fundamental understanding of the arts world, entering with an overly aggressive approach and “campaign tactics” that are leading the institution astray.

However, others asserted that he was precisely the individual needed to execute Trump’s vision, commending his “no-nonsense attitude” and his efforts to bring numerous new personnel to the center.

In recent days, Trump has become “somewhat disenchanted with him,” according to a source close to the Kennedy Center.

“Ric worked diligently to remain in Trump’s favor, but Trump grew weary of constantly seeing news reports about the poor management of the Kennedy Center and how ‘Trump is ruining it’,” the source stated.

One of the sources privy to the future plans for the Kennedy Center also characterized Grenell’s exit as a transition, rather than a dismissal, noting that the arts institution is moving into the construction phase of its scheduled renovation, and Grenell expressed no desire to remain during this building period.

CNN has sought comments from both Grenell and the White House.
