Kentucky tornado drill: State officials to test emergency alerts

Kentucky’s annual tornado safety drill is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4. Here’s what you need to know.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With severe weather season approaching, it’s time for Kentucky’s yearly statewide tornado drill.

This drill is set for Wednesday, March 4, at approximately 10 a.m., coinciding with Severe Weather Awareness Week.

No severe weather is anticipated during the drill, so the National Weather Service (NWS) intends to proceed with this annual test.

During the drill, the NWS will broadcast a test tornado message, triggering weather alert radios.

This alert will also activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS), transmitting across television and radio stations.

In Jefferson County, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed that outdoor warning sirens will sound, and Metro Emergency Services will simultaneously dispatch alerts via LENSAlert, the LouReady app, and the IPAWS (Wireless Emergency Alert) system.

Greenberg stated, “Severe weather poses a threat to every part of our community, and being prepared is among our most powerful methods for ensuring public safety.”

The NWS urged everyone to review and practice their tornado safety procedures during the drill.

Should an actual tornado warning occur, immediately seek refuge in the lowest section of your home, such as a basement.

For those without a basement, find shelter in an interior room of your residence, keeping clear of outside walls, doors, and windows.
