The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly planning to release guard Mekhi Becton, a strategic move expected to save the team $9.7 million against their salary cap, according to information from a source shared with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Becton, who joined the Chargers on a two-year, $20 million agreement last March, experienced a challenging season. The six-year veteran contended with injuries throughout the year and publicly voiced his frustration with the Chargers around November.
Entering the offseason with an estimated $86 million in salary cap flexibility, the Chargers are poised for a significant reconstruction of their interior offensive line. This effort will also involve replacing retired center Bradley Bozeman.
The formidable 6-foot-7, 363-pound Becton participated in 15 games last season for the Chargers, starting 14 of them. After being a first-round draft pick by the Jets in 2020, he faced a difficult four-year period in New York, plagued by injuries, before finding renewed success in 2024 with the Super Bowl champion Eagles.
