A chapter is closing for Lea Michele on Broadway. The Emmy Award nominee is set to conclude her run in Chess on June 21. Her successor in the role of Florence Vassy will be announced at a later date.
Michele, celebrated for her roles in Spring Awakening and Funny Girl on Broadway, as well as TV’s Glee, currently shares the stage with Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher. The production centers on two rival world chess champions whose rivalry extends beyond the board, complicated by the woman caught between them.
According to a review from New York Theatre Guide, “If you attend Broadway musicals hoping to experience performers deliver songs so powerfully they give you chills, you’ll discover that sensation in triplicate” with Chess.
This 1988 musical, now experiencing its inaugural revival at the Imperial Theatre, features an updated book by Danny Strong. The score, conceived by Tim Rice, comes from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, based on Rice’s original concept. Michael Mayer is at the helm as director.
Next week will see the release of an additional block of Chess tickets. The show’s engagement was originally scheduled to run until June 21.
