#NextGenATP sensation Rafael Jodar is making rapid strides in the tennis world.

The 19-year-old Spaniard showcased his talent, effortlessly dispatching 21-year-old American Ethan Quinn with a commanding 6-2, 6-3 victory on Tuesday. This win propels him into the second round of the Delray Beach Open, where he is now poised to challenge top seed Taylor Fritz.

Just twelve months ago, Jodar found himself ranked outside the Top 900 in the PIF ATP Rankings, honing his skills on the collegiate circuit at the University of Virginia. Today, he has surged to World No. 112 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, now on the cusp of breaking into the coveted Top 100.

A participant in last year’s Next Gen ATP Finals, Jodar secured his spot in the Delray Beach main draw via the ATP Next Gen Accelerator, a program designed to boost opportunities for players 20 and under. This event marks a significant milestone as he prepares to confront a Top-10 adversary for the very first time in Taylor Fritz, fresh off a finalist appearance last week in Dallas.

His impressive performance saw Jodar convert six out of ten break point opportunities, as highlighted by Infosys ATP Stats. The young Spaniard was particularly effective against the 2023 NCAA singles champion, winning an outstanding 16 of 20 second-serve return points (80%).

Watch Extended Tuesday Highlights:

Fifth seed Tommy Paul endured a grueling battle, ultimately overcoming French left-hander Corentin Moutet with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph. Paul’s path to victory was fraught with tension, as he required 11 match points to seal the win, squandering ten at 5-3 in the final set before finally serving it out.

“I didn’t feel like I was striking the ball exceptionally well today, but I believe my competitiveness was high,” Paul commented. “Losing that game at 5-3 in the third was definitely frustrating, but I knew I had to regroup. Ultimately, it boils down to serving out that final game, doesn’t it?

In what proved to be one of the day’s most compelling encounters, seventh seed Brandon Nakashima edged out former World No. 3 Marin Cilic in a grueling two-hour, 13-minute marathon, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(5). The American, firing 13 aces, successfully leveled their Lexus ATP Head2Head series at 1-1. Remarkably, neither competitor conceded their serve throughout the intense match.

“I’m extremely pleased with that win. It was certainly not an easy match, particularly with him coming off a strong semi-final performance in Dallas. Marin is a formidable opponent on any day, so I understood the necessity of bringing my absolute best game, and my serve was undoubtedly on point,” Nakashima stated. “This is an exciting period. I always relish the opportunity to compete back in the U.S., especially on hard courts, so I’m genuinely eager for this upcoming stretch of tournaments.”

Defending champion Miomir Kecmanovic smoothly progressed, securing a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mattia Bellucci. Meanwhile, lucky loser Adam Walton impressively ousted the formidable big-serving Canadian Gabriel Diallo with a 7-6(4), 6-3 scoreline.

Tuesday in Florida also featured a pair of all-American encounters. Sebastian Korda delivered a solid performance to defeat wild card Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 7-5, while qualifier Zachary Svajda powered past Aleksandar Kovacevic with a decisive 7-6(4), 6-3 win.
